North Lakes, Queensland — August 20, 2026 — JKA/WF Australia, the Australian affiliate of the Japan Karate Association, will hold two Shotokan karate seminars, in Melbourne, Victoria, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, and in Townsville, Queensland, on Saturday, November 28, 2026, so that members of its affiliated dojos can train together and align their technique with Japan Karate Association standards. Both seminars will be led by Chief Instructor Sensei Jason Naylor, 7th Dan JKA.
The Melbourne seminar starts at 9:30 AM AEST. The Townsville seminar, part of a North Queensland seminar program, starts at 9:00 AM AEST. A further session for members in the eastern branches is also scheduled during November. The seminars are open to members of JKA/WF Australia-affiliated dojos across New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria.
Sessions will cover the fundamentals of Shotokan karate: kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). All training will be delivered according to Japan Karate Association technical standards, so students from different branches practise the same methods.
Sensei Naylor has taught karate since 1986 and has trained extensively in Japan to further his technical knowledge. He serves as Chief Instructor for JKA/WF Australia, a non-profit organisation formally affiliated with the Japan Karate Association in Japan, one of the oldest Shotokan karate bodies in the world. The organisation oversees grading standards and technical direction for its network of affiliated clubs across the country.
“Karate is a way of life,” Naylor said. “It’s practiced through training the body and mind, self-control, and discipline.”
JKA/WF Australia periodically hosts seminars of this kind to give members from different branches the opportunity to train together and to help standardise technique across the organisation’s dojos. Attendance is typically open to current members of affiliated clubs, with registration handled through individual branch instructors ahead of each event.
The organisation follows the Shotokan karate style associated with Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern karate. Training is built around fundamentals, disciplined movement and a structured grading pathway. Students range from complete beginners to experienced practitioners preparing for advanced gradings, seminars and tournaments.
Instructors and clubs interested in affiliating a dojo with JKA/WF Australia, as well as prospective students seeking to join a club, can find branch listings and contact details on the organisation’s website. Branches are currently listed in New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria.
