Board of the World, an independent snowboard gear review site based in Dallas, Pennsylvania, today announced the release of a free mobile and web app that recommends snowboards using data from six years of hands-on product testing. The release comes as a growing share of online product reviews are produced with generative AI tools, which often summarize manufacturer descriptions rather than reporting on use of the product.
Board of the World tests more than 60 snowboards each season. Each board is ridden on the East Coast and scored against a 14-point set of criteria covering areas such as edge hold, stability, pop and ease of use. The site does not accept brand sponsorships or paid placements in its reviews.
The app uses that testing data to match riders with boards based on answers to five questions about ability level, terrain and riding style. Recommendations are drawn from the site's existing review scores and tester notes rather than generated by an AI model. The app also allows users to log their equipment, record ride data and submit their own gear reviews.
"Snowboard gear reviews have always depended on someone actually riding the board," said Steve Weber, founder of Board of the World. "Over the past year, more of the reviews that show up in search results appear to be written by AI tools that have never been on snow. For newer riders, that makes it harder to tell which information is based on real testing."
Weber said AI coding tools were used to help develop the app's software over the past year, but that all board recommendations and review content come from hands-on testing.
"Local shops are still the best source of advice for local mountain conditions," Weber said. "But a lot of gear is bought online now, and the testing data should be available where people are making those decisions."
Board of the World began publishing snowboard reviews six years ago and covers boards and bindings across freestyle, all-mountain, freeride and powder categories. The app is available on iOS, Android and the web.
