MachineTranslation.com now accepts XLIFF and MQXLIFF files exported from CAT tools such as MemoQ, Trados, and Phrase, and returns the translated file in the same format for reimport.
Tomedes, a professional translation company, has added native XLIFF and MQXLIFF file support to MachineTranslation.com, its AI translation platform. With this update, translators can upload bilingual files exported from computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and download the translated output in the same file format.
XLIFF files are used across most major CAT tools, including MemoQ, Trados, Phrase, Wordfast, and OmegaT. A single XLIFF file stores the source text, the target segments, segment identifiers, and project metadata. This structure allows a translation project to move between tools and team members without losing its organization.
Before this update, translators who wanted to process CAT tool content on MachineTranslation.com had to export the text as a plain document, translate it on the platform, and then manually place the translated text back into their project. That process removed the segment structure and metadata stored in the original file and added extra steps to each project.
How the update works
The new workflow has three steps. First, the translator exports an XLIFF or MQXLIFF file from their CAT tool. Second, the translator uploads the file to MachineTranslation.com and selects the language pair. Third, the translator downloads the translated file in its original format and imports it back into the CAT tool, where the segments appear in their original positions.
During translation, the platform processes the content with multiple AI models, compares their output segment by segment, and selects the translation that the majority of models agree on. The translator can then review and edit the output inside the CAT tool as part of their normal quality assurance process.
XLIFF (XML Localization Interchange File Format) is an open standard maintained by OASIS for exchanging localization data between tools. MQXLIFF is the variant of the format used by MemoQ, a CAT tool used by freelance translators and language service teams in Europe and other regions.
“Most professional translators already have an established CAT tool workflow,” said Ofer Tirosh, CEO of Tomedes. “This update lets them use MachineTranslation.com on their project files without changing that workflow. They upload the file, review the result, and import it back into the project.”
Single-model and multi-model output
AI translation features built into many CAT tools rely on one model, which produces one suggestion per segment. MachineTranslation.com instead runs the same text through 22 AI models and compares their output. Segments where the models agree are presented as the selected translation, and results that differ from the majority are excluded.
“XLIFF support was one of the features our professional users requested most often,” said Shashank Jain, Tech Lead at Tomedes. “Translators working in MemoQ, Trados, and Phrase handle these files daily. Supporting the format on both upload and download removes the conversion step they previously had to do.”
Availability
XLIFF and MQXLIFF support is available now on MachineTranslation.com. The platform supports more than 330 languages.
