Wilderness Records is proud to announce the forthcoming self-titled debut full-length album from Sparks from the Sky, the solo project of singer-songwriter John Greene, best known as co-founder of the acclaimed indie rock outfit Midnight In Saskatchewan. The self-titled album will be released on September 17, 2026.
The record follows two singles that have already offered a glimpse into the project’s distinct sonic identity: “Her Name,” the project’s introductory single, and “Cura Mei Solaece,” released on August 13, 2026, just ahead of the full album. Together, these releases mark Sparks from the Sky as a fully realized artistic vision, separate from Greene’s work with Midnight In Saskatchewan, and reflective of a more personal and introspective songwriting approach.
Sparks from the Sky was recorded over an intermittent, extended period of three years, taking shape gradually as Greene revisited and refined the material across multiple sessions rather than in a single continuous production cycle. What began as a more conventional 13-song project eventually grew into a sprawling 20-track album, as Greene chose to include seven additional instrumental pieces: songs for which he was never able to find lyrics that felt right. Rather than setting the material aside, he repurposed these instrumentals as interludes woven throughout the record, marking transitions between sections of the album that each explore distinct sonic territory.
That sonic range is one of the album’s defining features. While rooted in the songwriting sensibility Greene has built over the course of his career, several tracks venture into new territory, incorporating elements of space rock, art rock, and neo-prog not previously heard in his work. The result is a record that is, at times, sonically complex and ambitious, yet remains musically compelling and engaging from beginning to end.
Reflecting on the making of the album, Greene commented:
“This record wouldn’t exist without the people who moved in and out of the process with me over the years. So many collaborators contributed at different stages, and each one of them brought something essential — real professionalism, and a willingness to leave an incisive mark on the material. I don’t think I could have gotten here alone.”
With this debut, Greene steps into a new creative space, bringing his established songwriting sensibility into a solo context while exploring textures and themes distinct from his primary band. The album represents the culmination of a period of focused, independent work, and stands as Sparks from the Sky’s most complete artistic statement to date.
Greene also singled out his wife’s performance in particular:
“I have to say something about Jocelyn’s drumming on this record. She played on every single track, and what she brought was fantastic — honestly, the best I’ve ever seen her play. I was genuinely blown away watching it come together.”
Sparks from the Sky will be available on all major digital streaming platforms starting September 17, 2026, via Wilderness Records.
