Waikato Marketing has published a study showing corporate teams allocate up to 19 percent of operational budgets to artificial intelligence, shifting spend from traditional software as overall marketing budgets remain flat.
CAMBRIDGE, New Zealand — September 23, 2026 — Waikato Marketing released findings today from its 2026 report on corporate marketing technology budgets. The study analyzed enterprise budget allocation, search engine technology shifts, and advertising platform changes. According to the data, companies are reallocating existing operational budgets toward artificial intelligence systems while overall corporate marketing expenditures remain unchanged.
Budget Reallocation Trends
The study reports that total marketing budgets average 7.8 percent of company revenue. Within those existing budget limits, operational spending on artificial intelligence software and automated tools now ranges between 15.3 percent and 19.0 percent.
To fund these technologies, organizations are reducing expenditures on traditional third-party software platforms, which decreased to 19.4 percent of marketing budgets. The report indicates a broader industry movement away from fixed per-seat software licenses toward usage-based pricing models.
Search Engine Infrastructure
The research outlines changes in digital search behavior as search platforms incorporate direct answers generated by artificial intelligence. As user interaction patterns shift away from traditional web link clicks, businesses are adjusting their strategies. The report notes an increased focus on maintaining brand visibility and securing source citations within AI-generated responses, alongside traditional search engine indexing.
Advertising Automation and Governance
In paid media channels, advertising platforms increasingly rely on automated systems for audience targeting and campaign optimization. According to the research, campaign performance is shifting toward technical factors, such as direct server-side data integration and the volume of creative assets provided to automated systems.
The study also evaluated internal management practices, finding that adoption of automated tools has progressed faster than internal governance frameworks. Many surveyed organizations continue to develop formal policies regarding data privacy, risk management, and the verification of machine-generated content.
