MANNHEIM, Germany – August 27, 2026 – Watch Water GmbH, a Mannheim-based manufacturer of water and wastewater treatment technologies, has announced the development of Instant Membrane, a liquid treatment concept designed to remove dissolved contaminants without a physical membrane barrier. The company published details of the technology on August 10, 2026.
Conventional membrane treatment methods, such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration, push water through a physical membrane structure, a process that can require significant pressure and energy and generates a concentrated reject stream. Instant Membrane is designed to replace that physical barrier with a chemical process.
The system uses a diluted liquid formulation containing two functional components, one cationic and one anionic. When dosed into flowing untreated water or wastewater, the components are designed to interact with oppositely charged dissolved species and convert them into insoluble precipitates that can be separated from the water.
The treatment follows a four-stage process: dosing, a 10-metre zigzag contact section for mixing and reaction, precipitation inside a Vortex Pressure Vessel, and solids capture through an automated Crystolite Duplex Filtration System. The duplex filtration setup uses two vessels, one in service and one on standby, allowing automated backwashing based on pressure differential and supporting continuous operation.
Watch Water positions Instant Membrane as a response to industry demand for more compact, automated and resource-efficient treatment methods, including high-recovery and Zero Liquid Discharge applications, where reducing reject volumes and simplifying equipment are ongoing priorities.
