LOOKS, a feature-length documentary and online series now in production, examines how appearance quietly shapes everyday life. The project treats appearance and aesthetics broadly, looking at people, products, spaces, and the digital content that fills daily attention, and it approaches the subject as a cinematic experience rather than a plain explanation.
The social mission of the film comes from an unexpected place: orthodontics. Beyond the familiar version of braces and a straighter smile, LOOKS focuses on the quieter story of how a child's bite and face develop, and how that development can relate to the growth of the jaws, to breathing, and to posture. According to the project, this knowledge is specialized rather than controversial, and specialized knowledge has a hard time traveling beyond the journals and clinics where it lives.
Timing is part of the reason the team chose to make a film. A great deal of what matters happens during specific windows of childhood growth, which means awareness that reaches families early can be useful in a way that later awareness is not. The team describes parents as short on attention rather than short on warnings, because so much competes for it, so the project aims to present the subject in a form that a general audience will actually want to watch.
To do that, LOOKS blends 3D and 2D animation with drawing, painting, and sculpture, woven together with expert interviews and live-action footage. A significant part of the visual language is borrowed from the tools of 3D software, using perspective grids and wireframe forms to make normally invisible parts of facial development visible on screen. The project also brings together perspectives from fields such as aesthetic medicine, health, psychology, design, architecture, and technology, allowing several disciplines to examine the same question side by side.
