Woodridge, IL, October 11, 2026 — Oxygen Health Systems released a new Built-In Breathing System compatibility checklist on March 24 for hyperbaric chamber operators and equipment buyers in the United States. The checklist was created to help facilities document whether a BIBS mask and its related components are suitable for a specific chamber before the equipment is used.

Built-In Breathing Systems, generally referred to as BIBS, supply a designated breathing gas to occupants inside certain hyperbaric chambers. Some systems also carry exhaled gas out of the chamber. Although BIBS assemblies may look similar, their masks, hoses, valves, connectors, and exhaust arrangements can differ from one manufacturer or chamber model to another.

The new checklist begins with basic equipment information. Users can record the chamber manufacturer and model, the BIBS configuration, the required operating conditions, and the part numbers of the proposed mask and related components. It also provides space to note whether the manufacturer has confirmed compatibility in writing.

Lightweight masks receive particular attention because weight is often considered during product selection. A lighter mask may be easier for some occupants to handle, but weight alone does not show that a mask is appropriate for a particular chamber. Compatibility also depends on valve operation, gas-flow requirements, hose routing, connector design, exhaust arrangements, and the specifications of the complete system.

The checklist covers five main areas:

  • Chamber, mask, and BIBS manufacturer information

  • Hose, valve, connector, and exhaust specifications

  • Mask fit, adjustment, communication, and positioning

  • Cleaning, disinfection, inspection, and storage instructions

  • Replacement intervals and approved-part availability

A separate section lists documents that a facility may need to request from a manufacturer or supplier. These can include technical specifications, operating instructions, cleaning guidance, inspection procedures, maintenance schedules, compatibility statements, and replacement-part information.

The resource also addresses adapters and substitute components. A part that connects physically may not meet the operating requirements of the complete BIBS assembly. For that reason, the checklist advises users to obtain written technical confirmation before introducing an adapter or component that has not been identified for use with the applicable system.

Operators can use the final section to record routine inspections of masks, seals, valves, hoses, fittings, and exhaust components. It includes fields for the inspection date, observed wear, corrective action, replaced parts, and the name of the person completing the review.

The checklist does not set a universal maintenance schedule. Inspection and replacement requirements vary according to the equipment manufacturer, chamber model, frequency of use, and operating environment. Facilities should follow the instructions provided for their specific equipment.

The document is intended for equipment review and recordkeeping. It does not provide medical guidance or replace review by the chamber manufacturer, qualified technicians, engineers, healthcare professionals, or relevant authorities.

The checklist is available in the resource section of the Oxygen Health Systems website.
