Scene1 has released a documentary titled Aquaculture Tilapia, directed by Herve Jaubert. The 52-minute film explores the life cycle of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), from eggs in hatcheries to harvest-size fish in floating cages, filmed at Lake Taal, a volcanic lake in the Philippines. The documentary was released on June 1, 2026, and is available on digital platforms.
The film examines the unusual fishery setup at Lake Taal, where thousands of floating fish cages surround Taal Volcano Island. The fisheries cover approximately 26,000 hectares, with cages located about 2 kilometers from Taal's crater. The volcano's last major eruption, on January 12, 2020, destroyed one-third of the fish cages and halted aquaculture for months. On August 19, 2024, a thick volcanic smog—a mixture of smoke and fog—enveloped towns around the volcano, prompting authorities to suspend fishing activity, close schools and businesses, and urge residents to stay indoors or wear face masks. Ash fallout also affected aquaculture in the lake; according to the Taal Lake Aquaculture Alliance, this event destroyed 30 percent of the fish cages. Authorities nonetheless allowed fisherfolk to feed and harvest their remaining stock despite restrictions limiting access near the active volcano.
Volcanic smog contains sulfur dioxide, water vapor, carbon dioxide, fine ash, and other gases released by hot volcanic fluids in Taal's crater lake. When these gases react with sunlight, they form sulfuric acid aerosols that can linger in the atmosphere, posing health and environmental risks. These aerosols can damage vegetation, contaminate water sources, harm aquatic life, and contribute to acid rain—affecting both ecosystems and aquaculture.
Despite these risks, tilapia farming in Lake Taal sustains the livelihoods of around 12,000 subsistence fisherfolk. Growers first raise tilapia in shallow nursery ponds around the lake—many of them former rice fields converted to increase and diversify incomes. Fingerlings are then transferred to floating cages in the lake. Farmers harvest over 100 metric tons of fish daily from roughly 7,000 cages, producing about 50,000 tons of fish per year. Aquaculture in Lake Taal supplies 60 percent of all fish consumed in Metro Manila. The industry supports jobs in cage farming, hatcheries, fish handling, marketing, and feed supply. Globally, tilapia has grown into a $12.5 billion industry, prized for its fast growth (reaching market size in 7–10 months), hardiness, and resource efficiency compared with terrestrial meats.
The documentary details the hatchery and farming process, showing how modern hatcheries monitor water temperature to encourage spawning, and follows fingerlings as they move from hatchery tanks to earthen ponds and finally to floating cages. It also highlights the scientific backbone of tilapia farming, including the sex-reversal technique pioneered in the Philippines by Dr. Rafael Guerrero III, used to cultivate all-male populations for more uniform growth.
